My War, My Child

My War, My Child
My Child, My War
Publication date: March 26th 2024
Genres: Adult, Historical

A law student at Dhaka University, Afsana’s future is bright. Her greatest concern is whether or not her parents will approve of her marriage. When they do, the young bride knows she can face anything the future holds.

Then war breaks out.

Six years later, she encounters a ghost from her past-her first husband, presumed dead in the fighting.

My War, My Child vividly and compassionately tells the story of Bengali birangona, the war heroines, whose lives were brutally torn apart by the 1971 War for Independence. Though the fight resulted in the freedom and independent nation so craved by the Bengali people, hundreds of thousands of women’s lives were devastated, leaving them to scrape together the pieces and carry on as best they could-often with children and orphans forced upon them.

This is a piece of history you’ve never heard before, an inside look at the resilience and strength of women around the world.

EXCERPT:

Farzad startled when she touched his arm. Her voice had changed indeed, weaker, but still the voice that in old days—not so very old either—-was the one voice that meant the whole world to him.

For a single instant, his thoughts strayed away into the past, and the marvel of his first love came back to him.
He looked down upon the soft hand that held his arm. He stared at the fingers, held in desperation.

His heart awoke under that touch, like a sudden flash of light, bringing back happy moments. And sad.
He recalled the last look that he had seen on her face at the door when they parted, her face conveying the anxiety of uncertainty about seeing him again.

He remembered that he had turned away abruptly, that in his preoccupied state of mind, he had not spoken one soothing word to her.
Her voice now sounded like a mournful echo of his dead love.

The days when he adored her, thought her the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, the days when he lived on in the bitterness of missing her gentle love for him, could not be revived again.

And it occurred to him that he still had a moment to decide, only a brief moment now, whether to take her back or abandon her.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

“It’s okay,” he murmurs. “Pretend you don’t want it.”

His kiss is urgent, unyielding. He forces my mouth open, allowing me to feign resistance. Or at the very least, nonchalance. I let him tilt my head back and run his lips down my neck. It’s a terrible game I’m playing, letting him take the fall for our mutual destruction.

I should at least tell him, confess my own desire, even if he already knows.

It would be the honorable thing to do.

“Will—”

“Ah ah,” he says with a slow shake of his head, with a devastating expression of knowing in his dark eyes. “In this office, you will address me as Professor Stratford.”

My secret muscles clench, and he gives me an almost boyish smile.

“This gets you hot, doesn’t it, Ms. Hill?”

How is this possible? I had a heavy course load of classes my freshman year, with professors of every shape and size. They were smart and interesting, and for the most part, at least somewhat arrogant. Professor Stratford is all those things…and more. He’s simply more. More handsome, more mysterious. More playful as he nips at my lower lip.

“I asked you a direct question, Ms. Hill. Don’t make me punish you.”

My eyes widen. It’s not an entirely fake break in my voice. “What kind of punishment?”

“Let’s see,” he says, tugging my T-shirt off, leaving me in my bra. The starkness is enough to make my cheeks burn. He’s fully clothed while I’m shirtless. “For the first offense, I wouldn’t be too harsh. Then again, we can’t have disruptive students, can we?”

I thought his fist in my hair had been perverse.

That holding me up against the window had been a wild form of desire.

This is far worse.

And far better.

At least my body thinks so, becoming hot and clenched, swollen around nothing, hungry to have him inside me again, thrusting and thrusting the ache away.

“I tried to behave,” I tell him, surrendering to the game. Surrendering to him. “I tried to be a good student. It’s just that you were so…distracting.”

That earns me a dark chuckle. Large, strong hands undress me with calm expediency, as if stacking books or finding the right page. With both care and anticipation.

At this moment I’m the worn pages of an old copy of Romeo and Juliet.

He thumbs through my pages.

“You’d blame your professor for your own lack of focus?”

I gasp at his touch, low and intimate. It’s too much, and I scoot back to get away from him. That only lands me on the edge of his desk, smooth wood cool beneath my bare ass. “Maybe I can make it up to you?”

“Extra credit,” he says, musing. “Perhaps an oral report would suffice.”

Storm Seed

High adventure and mystical intrigue await…

Storm Seed

Sacred Band Series Book 7

by Janet & Chris Morris

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Hot off the presses, the final "lost" volume of the iconic Sacred Band series in an all-new Author's Cut edition.

High adventure awaits in Storm Seed by Janet & Chris Morris:

- Travel with the Sacred Band of Stepsons to a future undreamed.

- Meet the changeling son of Tempus and the Froth Daughter.

- Learn what it takes to become a dragon.

- Bring gods to a godless realm.

Tempus the Black, avatar of the Storm God, and his partner Niko reunite the Sacred Band for a mission to a dying world. And from there -- should the gods allow -- to mystical Lemuria. -

Praise for the Sacred Band series: "Janet Morris, Tempus (1987), and, with Chris Morris, Tempus Unbound (1989), The Sacred Band (2010).

"A fantasy series about the Sacred Band of Stepsons, an elite army modeled on the fourth-century B.C.E. Sacred Band of Thebes. The stories explore the fraught personal relationships of mixed hetero- and homosexual troops, only sometimes paired, as they fight for their commander, the immortal Tempus. Morris includes archaeological and historical details, from physical items to social practices, religion, and philosophy, to create a fantasy world that is, in many ways, more historically accurate than many popular accounts of antiquity." -- Robert W. Cape, Jr, in Classical Traditions in Science Fiction, Brett M. Rogers & Benjamin Eldon Stevens, eds., Oxford University Press

For one adventurous bridal party, a week away at the exclusive Hideaway Island resort is the perfect opportunity for an unforgettable bachelor-and-bachelorette celebration. And as the maid-of-honor, Rae doesn't want to cause any problems when an unexpected complication forces her out of her guest room. Bunking with the one man she can't get out of her head - the infuriatingly bossy best man - might be a temptation, but it's better than ruining the ongoing party for the bride and groom.

Daddy Dom Brian is sure of two things - one, Rae is a natural babygirl, and two, she's just as attracted to him as he is to her. So when dumb luck gives him an entire week to put both of those beliefs to the test, he readily agrees to enjoy all the secret passion and pleasure Rae is willing to share with him so he can finally prove to her they belong together.

Brian

Since they were trying to keep Rae moving into his place a secret from everyone else, they went out the back, crossing over the beach to get her from her villa to his. Because of the way the cul-de-sac curved on the street, this gave them the least chance of being seen, as long as no one was out on the beach. Thankfully, they weren’t. The coast was completely clear, literally.

“You can just set my suitcase down— Where are you going?” The exasperation in Rae’s voice was clear as he kept walking, ignoring her because they were in the main room. She was gesturing toward the couch, as though she really thought he was going to let her sleep there.

Absolutely not.

Maybe it was old-fashioned of him, but if he was in a situation with a woman he wasn’t sharing a bed with and there was only one bed, she was absolutely going to be the one sleeping in the bed.

“I’m going to the bedroom,” he answered, even though it should be obvious. Before he could tell her that she got the bed and he’d take the couch, she was already talking again.

“Oh, so that’s how it is, huh? You offered me a room, and I’m going to pay for it with my body?”

Well, that was interesting. She didn’t sound defensive at all. In fact, she sounded like she was… flirting.

Pausing in the bedroom doorway, Brian turned around to look at her, one corner of his mouth lifting up in a smile when he met her gaze. She was standing next to the couch, hands firmly planted on her hips. The sun filtered in through the window behind her, making her dress a lot more sheer than he’d realized, and he wondered if she knew that he could see right through the fabric.

“Yes,” he said, just to see how she would respond.

“What?” Her mouth popped open, eyes widening—not in horror, but in surprise and… was that interest?

“Yes, I’m offering you a place to stay. You should repay me.” He was enjoying her shock enough to keep the joke going. Although he was starting to feel like maybe he wasn’t really joking.

After all, she was the one who had brought it up, not him.

Really? You’re going to give her another chance? Again? Have you not learned your lesson yet?

It didn’t have to be another chance, though. He already knew things weren’t going to work out between them, that she didn’t want him. It wasn’t setting himself up for rejection if he wasn’t going to put himself out there.

But if she was going to be staying here tonight, maybe they could do one more night. Just for fun. Closure of a kind. One night and then goodbye.

And this is what we call thinking with your dick instead of your brain.

His inner voice was disgusted with him because he knew he was rationalizing, and yet…

Rae lifted her chin, but he could tell from her expression she was intrigued. If this was the game she wanted to play… well, fuck, he wasn’t strong enough to resist. It was vacation, after all, and he knew the score.

Why not give in?

“Well, that’s not very gentlemanly.”

“Who said I was a gentleman?” He winked at her and turned away, heading into the bedroom. If she changed her mind, he’d just sleep out on the couch.

He wasn’t surprised when he heard her footsteps following him in. What did surprise him was when he turned around and found that she’d stripped off her dress, leaving her utterly naked.

Brian’s jaw dropped open.

“What are you doing?” he asked before he could stop himself. Obviously, he knew what she was doing, but his brain had come to a screeching halt at the sight of her bare breasts. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t seen boobs before, and he’d spent some time up close and personal with hers. He just hadn’t been expecting her to raise the stakes like this.

Shrugging one sassy shoulder, she ran her hands down over her body, skimming her curves, as though she thought maybe he’d missed the fact that she was naked.

“You said I have to pay for my stay, right?” A little smile flirted on her lips as she sashayed toward him. “Well, I don’t have any money on me at the moment… but…”

Sex chicken.

They were playing sex chicken and seeing who was going to blink first.

Well, it sure as hell wasn’t going to be him.
