Read an excerpt:
Blanche Gruman sprawled on the park bench in front of the Presbyterian Church Monday enjoying the afternoon sun, her long, tanned legs stretched out on the sidewalk in front of the bench. She looked serene, with her face turned sunward, eyes protected by aviator sunglasses. Her blonde hair was almost white, bleached by the sun, and she wore it long and loose.
“Afternoon, Blanche,” Charlie said as he made his way toward town hall.
Blanche turned her head to see who had spoken. “Well, hey, Charlie!” she replied. She quickly sat up, pulling her bare legs primly under the edge of the bench. It was a lady-like move; just what you would expect from Blanche. A broad smile, showing perfect pearl-white teeth lit up her face.
Blanche Gruman owned and operated a successful hair salon in town. For Shannon, it was an exclusive salon. Blanche was an excellent cutter and stylist, and her flamboyant but tasteful sense of style attracted the cream of Shannon’s women to her salon, as well as some of the more prominent men. She had expanded her business over the course of a decade, hiring additional staff, but she was the queen bee, and closely guarded her select clientele.
Blanche had never married, though she’d had a fairly constant parade of suitors. Rumor had it that when someone had once asked her why she had never married she had flippantly replied, “Why marry one man when I can make so many happy?” Whether or not this was true, it was generally agreed that Blanche had a less traditional approach to relationships with men than her female contemporaries, and it was speculated that many of her female devotees who religiously came to Blanche for hair treatment did so as a means of keeping an eye on her latest paramour, primarily to make sure it wasn’t a wayfaring husband.
“You look mighty pleased with yourself,” Charlie said. He stood in front of her, blocking the sun from her eyes. She removed her sunglasses, hooking one of the templates on the V-neck of a snug knit top that accented her generous curves.
“It’s a great day to celebrate life,” she told him, “and that’s just what I’m doing.” Clearly, she was enjoying herself.
Charlie changed the subject. “You hear about what happened to Otto Hilty the other night?”
His question soured Blanche’s mood noticeably. Her voice took on a hard edge when she responded. “That SOB …” she began. “I don’t truck with what happened to Otto,” she said, “but I’ll not shed any tears for him.” She put her sunglasses on and stood, facing Charlie. “Like I said … it’s a great day to celebrate.” She walked off leaving Charlie standing, literally, with his mouth agape.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Memoir/Autobiography
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
This
vivacious personal story captures the heart and soul of modern Iceland. Born in
Reykjavik on the eve of the Second World War, Sverrir Sigurdsson watched Allied
troops invade his country and turn it into a bulwark against Hitler’s advance
toward North America. The country’s post-war transformation from an obscure,
dirt-poor nation to a prosperous one became every Icelander’s success. Spurred
by this favorable wind, Sverrir answered the call of his Viking forefathers,
setting off on a voyage that took him around the world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
My maternal grandfather, Þorkell Magnússon, was the captain
of a fishing vessel called Gyða. In early April 1910, he and his seven-man
crew, including his eldest son, set sail from BÃldudalur, a small town in
northwest Iceland. Their destination was the rich fishing grounds beyond the
fjord. April was the beginning of the fishing season, which lasted until
September. These were the “mild” months. In reality, the weather was often
stormy and below freezing, pushing both the boat and men to the limit of their
endurance. Three weeks later, on April 23, Gyða headed for home, her hull laden
with cod, the valuable cash fish many fishermen had died for. Nearing their
home fjord, the men’s hearts must have lifted. A hot meal, a warm bed, and the
family’s embrace were within a day’s reach.
That night, a furious northerly gale pounded the region with
snow and sleet, whipping the sea into a deadly cauldron of crashing waves. All
hands would have scrambled on deck to wrestle with the wind, jibing and tacking
to keep the gusts from capsizing the boat. The battle went on all night. The
next morning, Gyða was still upright and staggering closer to home. Einar, my
grandfather’s neighbor and a former crew member, attested to seeing her from
shore during a visit to his family’s farm on the outer reaches of Arnarfjörður
(Eagle Fjord). The wind was still howling, pummeling the boat from left and
right. But Einar was confident the boat could hold herself together. After all,
Gyða was a sturdy oceangoing vessel, one of the first to be built in Iceland
with state-of-the art technology. In just a few more hours, she would reach the
safety of the harbor.
HUNGRY BUSINESS & Giveaway
Hungry Business: A Short Story
by Maria DeBlassie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Gothic, Horror (Cozy)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
From the multi-award-winning author of
Everyday Enchantments: Musings on Ordinary Magic & Daily Conjurings comes a
cozy Gothic short story about searching for connection in a world that's
forgotten the power of everyday magic.
Looking for love can be deadly...
You know how it goes. You go
out, hoping to meet someone. You wade
through your fair share of brainless automatons, lifeless bodies, and ravenous
undead good at passing as human.
The more you go out, the less hope you feel and the colder your body
gets. But you keep at it. All you need is one beating heart to match
your own before yours stops pumping altogether.
How hard can it be to find one living, breathing human in a city full of
bodies?
Dating.
It's hungry business.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
The things you do for love.
Like talking yourself into thinking that the lifeless body
across the table from you has his own kind of charm. Surely his gray pallor is
only a trick of the light. His skeletal
frame might even be considered athletic.
You try not to look at his chipped and bloodied fingernails as you force
down your mediocre steak tartar. Sadly,
that room temperature appetizer will be the hottest thing on the menu
tonight.
Maria DeBlassie
Returning to Soulful Living
In my cozy Gothic short story, Hungry Business, we have a protagonist
who is searching for love and meaningful connection. She’s got a lot of heart and a lot of
hope. But as her dates go from bad to
worse, she’s stuck with the horrible fear that she is destined to be
alone. Of course, things are complicated
by the fact that she is living through a supernatural pandemic.
The conflict in the outside world kicks off her personal crisis,
as she struggles to stay true to herself in
a world that wants her numb and soulless.
But where there’s hope, there’s magic, something my protagonist learns by the end of the
story. In order for her to
get her heart’s desire in a world where a living, beating human heart is a hot
commodity, she has to get real, go deep, and reject the status quo that’s
leaving her feeling so numb and empty.
Much like the pandemic we’re living through now, the supernatural
one in this story makes people feel isolated, disconnected from themselves and
others. That feeling causes panic! People get restless, nervous, start jumping
out of their skin to pretend like everything is normal, like it used to be,
when really, everything has changed.
They’d rather risk infection than pull back, pull in, and take this time
to nourish the soul.
In reality, we should let things change. Pre-pandemic life included too much busy, too
much mindless consumption, and too much exploitation of our natural resources,
not to mention terrible strife and oppression.
That’s not the kind of world we should return to. This is the time to let the world reset
itself. A time to return to soulful
living and let go of everything that wasn’t working prior to this.
It can be scary to pull in and to pull away from the mindless
collective. Scary to find yourself. That’s what makes Hungry Business a Gothic tale! But there’s also hope. Like in any good Gothic story, the damsel in
distress in this one discovers that what she finds most terrifying is the
unknown. It’s not the zombie apocalypse,
nor the very real issue of turning into a lifeless being. Her fear—the thing we all secretly fear—is
facing our own depths.
Times like these invite us to get real about who we are, what we
want, and what we’re willing to do to get it.
Those truths are raw, pushing back against mainstream culture’s
insistence that we must always be out, loud, surrounded by people. That’s what makes pulling back from the outer
world so scary: In the silence and stillness, we discover the unfathomable
depths of ourselves and reconnect to soul.
It’s the sublime, at once beautiful and terrifying with its
awesomeness.
I love writing cozy Gothic stories. The Gothic
genre is all about facing the darkness so that we can find the light. So maybe take a line from the protagonist in Hungry Business
and settle in, put on a pot of tea, turn on those twinkle lights, and sink into
some soul-nourishing stories that heal and inspire.

He hung with the rope around his neck, his tongue sticking out with a red-starved oxygen face. At the same time, he was smiling as though he was only having fun. Death was a reenactment that he had become accustomed to, to the point he thought it funny; a way of horrifying others and making them pay attention. He had a young mind—innocent and conditioned to get the attention of others. Little Charlie didn’t know whether he was dead or alive; far too young to understand. As far as he was concerned, tying a loop around his neck, jumping, and choking to death made him realize he felt no pain. He could do it over and over again.
Clarisse knew from her encounter in Hartley that Little Charlie was an attention seeker and someone who liked to cling onto you. That could explain how he had ended up in Old Tailem Town. Running away from evil might seem like a good idea at the time, but you could not hide.
“Come over here, Little Charlie. There is nothing to be afraid of,” she said.
He replied with a cheeky grin on his boyish face. His mousy brown hair thrown from side to side, he signaled with his right index finger, waving it left to right many times.
“Nuh-uh,” he mimed, his way of saying no.
About the Author: Janice Tremayne is an Amazon bestselling and award-winning ghost and supernatural writer. Janice is a finalist in the Readers' Favorite 2020 International Book Awards in Fiction-Supernatural.
She is an emerging Australian author who lives with her family in Melbourne. Her recent publication, Haunting in Hartley, reached number one on the Amazon kindle ranking for Occult, Supernatural, and Ghosts and Haunted Houses categories, for hot new releases and bestsellers.
Janice is well-versed in her cultural superstitions and how they influence daily life and customs. She has developed a passion and style for writing ghost and supernatural novels for new adult readers.
The concept of writing the Haunting Clarisse series was spawned over a cup of coffee many years ago, and she has not looked back since. Her books contain heart-thumping, bone-chilling, and thought-provoking ghost and paranormal experiences that deliver a new twist to every tale.
