When life catches up with young and brilliant investment banker Lucas Blake in the form of anonymous threats, his existence is exactly what he always wished it could be.

Or is it really?

He can barely remember what his true aspirations looked like a decade ago. All he knows now is that everything he worked so hard to build could crash down in a split second if whoever is blackmailing him decides to act on it.

To make matters more complicated, the team he ends up hiring to silently find the culprit of those menaces includes Raven Collins. A woman Lucas lost touch with, but who he still can't get out of his head completely even years after having met her.

As the race to keep him out of harm's ways unfolds, he enters a journey of self-discovery that might very well make him question the core of his life choices.

When greed, power, and old ideals pair together within a perfect storm is it possible to come out of it unscathed?

Can one's principles thrive in a system that seems to bend even the strongest minded to its will?

Lucas and Raven are about to find out for themselves.

She has to call him out on it. “I thought your standards were higher than this.” He follows her movements on the dance floor to position his hands low on her hips. She intuitively places hers on top. “The man I met back in Mykonos had higher ones at least.”

She can vividly remember that he once confessed to her over dinner, Money can corrupt the soul, he said. I want to make enough of it to go by and live a good life, but I won’t make a deal with the Devil to make it happen. He took a bite of his Moussaka. I would rather work for a smaller investment bank and be able to look at myself in the mirror than reaching the highest spheres and helping corrupt people.

How could he have forg—

He drops his voice to a whisper, oscillating his pelvis to the rhythm of the song. “Sorry to disappoint.”

She inattentively trails her fingers along his forearm. “Do you think that everyone who’s here tonight is doing it for the most righteous reasons?”

He snorts. “Of course not.”

“I don’t think so either.” She leans more into his front. “You and I both know that a bunch of them are only here to show that they want to help people, but in their daily lives they only care about profit and themselves. They’re inherently egoistical.” She toys with his matte black skull shaped cufflinks “They’re here because they can deduct it from their taxes. All this hypocrisy is making me cringe.”

He bends down to brush his scruff below her ear. “People do whatever makes sense to them.”

She breathes in to stay composed, deciding to throw him back his own words from years ago. “As long as they can look at themselves in the mirror, right?”

If he picks up on the reminder, he doesn’t let it show. “Something like that. It’s how people roll.” He curls his fingers around her hip bone to bring her flush to him. “Some are still well intentioned.”

She hums.

He’s steadily driving her out of her mind.

Only him could make her feel like dancing that ardently while talking about compelling topics is natural.

She can feel him respond to her as she sways into him in sync with the thumping bass.

Her entire skeleton is screaming at her to do something to release the tension coiling in her belly.

Her mind is shouting that it’s a way too dangerous thought to entertain if she wants to keep her sanity in the long run.

If they continue this, she has no idea which part of her will take over.

She tries to keep her increasingly ragged breathing under control. “The line between having good intentions and genuinely not giving a shit about others is getting blurrier by the second for a slew of people.” She has an urge to feel him caress her bare flesh. She glides his hand down her thigh. “I just couldn’t act that way anymore. Been there, done that, and saw it all before my eyes. I’m never going back.”

About the Author:
M.H. Cali is my pen name. From as long as I can remember, writing has been my biggest creative outlet. There are tales that take hold in my brain, and I have to write them. Which means that when it happens, I sit down and do just that.

The world is complex and flawed, and so are the characters inhabiting the universes I build. In my fiction novels, I thrive fleshing out stories that explore multiple themes within. If you ever read any of my works, you’ll notice that I love writing layered characters, having a diverse cast, and that to me quiet moments are just as important—if not more—than action-packed ones.

Storytelling is all about balance in the emotions and events throughout the narrative. It's my motto.

If I manage to make you feel what the characters are going through, live the events with them, and wonder what is going to happen, then I succeeded.

If you ever give my stories a chance, I hope you enjoy!

Praise for The Water Tower:

"Start with a suspicious death of a beloved student, add a devoted former starlet turned drama teacher, and a dash of the police closing the case far too quickly, and you have the makings of a twisting and propulsive mystery. Amy Young’s The Water Tower will keep you flipping the pages to find out who killed the politician’s young daughter, and then have you checking if your teenager is where they should be tonight."
~ Mary Keliikoa, multi-award nominated author of HIDDEN PIECES and the PI Kelly Pruett mystery series

"The Water Tower is an electrifying work of suspense that depicts a wonderful hometown setting. This slow-burn mystery with sparkling prose has a well-crafted plot that is at once engrossing and fully realized from beginning to end. I highly recommend this engaging mystery."

Read an excerpt:

Chapter 1

She stood on the water tower, looking at the skyline she had only observed from the ground. You really could see the whole town from up here. Funny how your whole life can fit into one 360-degree glance. Peering down at the ground, she was no longer able to see individual blades of grass, all of them blurring into a sea of perfect emerald green. To her right was the roof of Lakeview High School, looking small from this vantage point. She felt as though if she leaned over far enough, she could almost touch it. But that was ridiculous; the school had to be several hundred feet away. Her vision came in and out of focus as she swayed, thinking about her life, her past, her future.

In her three years at the school, she had never been up on the tower. No one she knew had been up here, either. Most students wouldn't dare to scale it. Too scared of getting caught, too scared of breaking the rules, too scared of living. When she looked down at the ground, she thought she could see movement, like little grass men dancing and hopping around through a crowd of their peers. Kind of like high school. More like, exactly like high school. Everyone looks the same; maybe some are a bit taller, a bit shorter, a bit wider, but everyone dressed in essentially the same uniform, hopping over one another, trying to make their mark.

How many feet above the ground was she—50, 60 feet? Was that high enough to kill you, or maybe just break a few bones? It would probably depend on how you hit the ground. Here she was, high above the town, pondering the angle at which you might hit the ground and live through the fall, the velocity at which an object might fall from here.

Her body felt warm all over, despite the crisp air of late fall, and she took off her jacket and threw it aside. She leaned against the rail and spread her arms, allowing the breeze to blow through her, inhabiting every cell for just a moment, before moving off in another direction to go dance with someone else. Her 17 years had all been spent here, in this one place, in this small, boring town where, it seemed, nothing was all that was destined to happen.

The clock tower chimed; it was 11:00. She felt she had eternity in front of her, the rest of this night, the rest of her life, stuck here in this town. Would she ever get out? Did it even matter if she did? She thought about the college catalogs arriving at home, the hundreds of pages of sales pitches clamoring for her family's money. The sprawling campuses, the smiling students, the serious, but friendly, professors—what was the point? She would just end up back here, raising the same family as her friends, living the same life that her kids would eventually live.

Reaching out her slender arm, she twirled her wrist. She could hardly wait for graduation when, everyone said, “real life” would begin. “I can't wait to get out of here,” her friends exclaimed, dreaming of big cities and even bigger lives in far off places: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, anywhere but here. But she knew they would return, just like their parents, raising 2.5 kids with a Labradoodle and a balding husband in one of the best-little-suburbs in the country. Was it really so bad? She watched all these super-educated women who had given up their careers to stay home and clean up after the kids and drive to soccer practice, instead of changing the world as they'd so hopefully planned when plotting their escape years earlier. Was that her fate? Was that what awaited her now? Dozens of similar thoughts swirled and crashed like waves in front of her, mixing in a fantastic spray of colors, lights, and sounds.

She was dead before she hit the ground.

I learned to read when I was four or five, listening to my mother read to me when I was lonely after my brother started school. Ever since, I’ve had my head buried in books. I love words – historical plaques, signs, the cereal box – but my first love has always been novels.

A little over ten years ago my husband dared me to write a book instead of always reading them. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, but to my surprise I love writing. Those early efforts eventually became my first published book – Tempting the Earl (published by Avalon Books in 2010). It has been a thrilling adventure as I learned to navigate the world of publishing.

I believe firmly that everyone deserves a happily ever after. I want my readers to be able to escape from the everyday for a little while and feel upbeat and refreshed when they get to the end of my books.

When not reading or writing, I can be found traipsing around my neighborhood or travelling the world with my favorite companion.

Along the Dusty Road

Along the Dusty Road
Joey Jones
Publication date: October 5th 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Suspense

An unexpected love. A surprising second chance.

Everything Luke Bridges always wanted is in the small coastal North Carolina town where he has spent most of his twenty-six years—a fulfilling mental health therapy career, a loving family, baseball games with his dad, an adventurous beach life, and a close-knit group of friends. The only piece missing is someone to share it with, a genuine and lasting love that satisfies the soul.

He once thought Emily Beckett, the girl he dated ten years ago who has happened back into his life as his sidekick on the coed beach volleyball team, could be that someone. Emily has a seven-year-old son and an ex-husband with dangerous addictions. Although Luke enjoys spending time with Ayden, he has no interest in the challenges of being a stepfather.

Luke only dates women he can see himself marrying. With the “just friends” title firmly placed on his relationship with Emily, he agrees to a blind date with Mindy, his mentor’s cousin. As he explores a connection with Mindy, the “just friends” veil with Emily is suddenly ripped away. Now he is torn between two very different women—one who might be perfectly right for him and one who doesn’t seem to fit the mold but just might make his dreams of forever come true.

Fears, tragedy, love, and second chances all collide Along the Dusty Road.

EXCERPT:

Stargazing on a blanket near the ocean hadn’t been on my agenda for the night, but I certainly was elated it turned out this way.

“It’s getting a little cool out here,” Emily said after pointing out several constellations.

“I can run inside and grab another blanket to use as a cover,” I offered.

She shook her head from side to side. I waited a moment and then scooted close to her.

“That’s what I hoped you’d do,” she admitted.

I wasn’t sure if she also hoped I would roll onto my side, gaze into her deep blue eyes, run my fingers through her soft hair, and then gently kiss her shivering lips—but that’s exactly what I did next.

Beyond us, waves rolled one over the other; the seabirds called out through the gentle breeze; and ships sailed in the distance.

Emily’s thin lips tasted like perfection, and I found myself caught in a moment more intimidating than anything I had done in a long time. I felt her body flush against mine, causing my insides to tremble ever so slightly. Our lips moved together, slowly and passionately, as if dancing to the most romantic song the Universe ever played. Before I could think about what was happening between us, I realized her arm caressed the back of my head and her leg wrapped around my thigh.

I desired this moment for so long even longer than I realized. To touch her soft skin and to sense the tiny movements between our bodies felt good. Her perfume tickled my nose as I kissed her neck. She turned slightly, and I continued to navigate my way across her collarbone with my lips. At the same time she rubbed my back with her hand barely digging her fingernails into my skin causing me to want more of her. Yet this was just enough. Kissing her. Touching her. This was intimacy.

What was happening between Emily and me at this very moment meant way more to me than any encounter I talked myself into on lonely nights. It was real, and I think it meant as much to her as it did to me. I could tell this by how our eyes locked every time we looked at one another. Even though we kept our clothes on as we rolled around on a blanket by the sea for nearly thirty minutes, I felt as though I already made love to Emily Beckett.

Author Bio:

The writing style of Joey Jones has been described as a mixture of Nicholas Sparks, Richard Paul Evans, and James Patterson. USA Today Bestselling Author Jeff Gunhus compared Jones’ work to Debbie Macomber, Nicholas Evans, and Sparks. National Bestselling Author Kristy Woodson Harvey described Joey Jones’ writing as “lyrical” and proclaims “he effortlessly pulls readers into the souls of his characters.”

The ratings and reviews of Jones’ novels A BRIDGE APART (2015), LOSING LONDON (2016), A FIELD OF FIREFLIES (2018), and THE DATE NIGHT JAR (2019) reflect the comparison to the aforementioned New York Times bestselling authors.

Joey Jones fell in love with creative writing at a young age and decided in his early twenties that he wanted to write a book. His debut novel A BRIDGE APART is a suspenseful love story that was years in the making as he tinkered with the story off and on while working full-time in the marketing field. In February 2016, Jones became a full-time novelist and published his second novel LOSING LONDON later that year. Three of Jones’ novels have earned 4.8 out of 5.0 Amazon stars.

In his spare time, Joey enjoys spending time with his family, playing sports, working out, reading, and writing inspirational quotes. His favorite meal is a New York Style Pizza with sweet tea. He won the 8th-grade spelling bee at his school, but if you ask him how many students participated, he might say, “Such minor details are not important!” He currently lives in North Carolina with his family.

Joey Jones earned a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Maryland University College where he graduated with honors (2006). He was the owner of a full-service advertising agency and taught business and marketing courses as an adjunct college instructor.

 EXCERPT:

I frantically checked every inch of the kitchen, high and low, even in the cool professional-grade oven that I briefly wished I’d had the opportunity to test out for this occasion, but there was absolutely no sign of my cupcake creations. Someone had clearly taken them. There was no other explanation.

Panic surged through me, and I spun around and punched open the door and called out for Marie right away. “The cupcakes are gone!” I shouted in panic and despair.

“Wait, what? Are you sure?” Marie responded, her head popping up from laying out the last of the cookies. She appeared baffled as she rushed to my side and saw for herself that the kitchen was empty of any more baked goods.

I recounted searching every possible place in the kitchen they could be, tears stinging my eyes. “I worked so hard on those.” Weeks of baking and freezing and crafting the flavors and planning. Now it was all gone.

Dismayed, Marie grabbed me up for a quick hug and set me free again, determination in her light eyes. “I’ll go ask the servers if any of them maybe moved them somewhere. They have to be around here. Cupcakes don’t just get up and walk away!” She was already gone, leaving the swinging door batting back and forth behind her.

It didn’t matter what she promised though. Like a mother’s sixth sense about the safety of her children, I knew, deep down, that the cupcakes were gone.

Finding the Zodiac Killer

True Crime,  Serial Killers True Accounts ,  Crime & Criminal Biographies

Date Published:  October 1, 2023

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a serial killer, who called himself the ZODIAC, terrorized Northern California with cold-blooded murders and a series of taunting ciphers and letters. His first set of three ciphers, considered at the time to be one, were sent to three newspapers in 1969. They were cracked by a couple within a week. On July 11, 2021, David Daniel read, where the Zodiac had stated in a letter, that the three ciphers contained his identity, but the couple and the authorities claimed that it wasn’t there. David believed that the authorities had said the ciphers didn’t reveal the Zodiac’s identity for one reason—they couldn’t find it. He knew it was there and he knew that he would find it. He looked at the first of the three ciphers—the one that the Zodiac had sent to the Vallejo Times Herald. Within three to seven seconds, he knew he had solved the nation’s most notorious unsolved murder case. David studied the cipher further and looked at other ciphers that the killer had sent. One by one he cracked the ciphers and completely solved another. Within two minutes he had absolutely confirmed the secret identity of the ZODIAC killer multiple times. Law enforcement and cryptographers have been searching for his identity for over 50 years. Finally, the search is over. He has been found!

About the Author

Let me tell you a little about myself. In the 1970s, I predicted that the serial killer called the Hillside Strangler were two people (not one) and that they were stepbrothers or step cousins. I was right. I predicted that another serial killer, the Grim Sleeper, lived near 81st and Western in Los Angeles. When they found him, he lived three houses down from the corner of 81st and Western.

When the TV series The Mentalist came out in 2008, I deciphered codes, unscrambled anagrams, and solved multiple clues and I knew the secret identity of Red John—the fictitious serial killer on the series—after the first two episodes. I have written a book about my discoveries called The Mentalist Code and the Search for Red John.

Now I have cracked the ciphers and clues sent by the real serial killer—The Zodiac—who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Cryptologists, law enforcement and other have been seeking his identity for over 50 years.

My book—The Code: The Secret Code Hidden in the English Language—which details my amazing discovery of a secret code hidden in the English language is too shocking to believe—will be coming out within weeks.

Blurb:

Isaiah Morillo, Portland Bears’ baseball star, was my ultimate downfall.

We were only meant to be a passing fling, but all it took was one bad decision to bring my world crashing down.

With my life in tatters and my reputation ruined, I hoped to escape the scandal by retreating to Gatlin Falls.

Little did I know, more chaos awaited me there.

Holly Gatlin was forbidden fruit and my ultimate addiction.

One taste would never be enough.

When my reckless actions caused Holly to lose it all, I vowed to make things right. I didn’t know how, but I would—an eye for an eye and all that sh*t.

And once that cold, hard payback had been served, I was heading to Gatlin Falls to get my girl.

Find the courage to live as your authentic self

In a world full of pressures from society, friends, and family to be what you are expected to be, you have lost sight of who you really are. You are lost in the darkness looking for your light.

It is there waiting for you to rediscover it, and with it, your truth and power.
