EXCERPTS:

There must be something she could do to help him.

He shuddered, his eyes closed, and dropped his hands to the floor, his fingers clawing the wood. A sound that was almost a growl rumbled in his chest.

She wanted to run. Instead she caressed his hair. After a moment, his breathing evened out and his tense muscles relaxed.

“Sorry about this,” he said, his head still bowed so that his dark hair concealed his face.

“You don’t have to apologize, but I wish you’d tell me what this is all about.”

“It’s just anxiety.”

“Like PTSD?”

He lifted his gaze to hers. His face was pale. Tendrils of hair clung to his damp forehead. “I guess. In a way,” he said, knitting his eyebrows. He shifted his position to sit with his back against the wall. Again he closed his eyes.

“It’s freezing in here,” Holly said, rising to close the window. “Go back to bed.”

He also stood, again so near to her that if she just leaned a bit closer, their mouths would touch. Something ignited deep in his eyes and for a moment she thought he might kiss her. Instead he walked to the bed and sat on it.

“Do you need me to stay with you for a while?” she asked.

“No. Go back to sleep.”

She studied him for a moment. He was staring blankly, as if somewhere else in his mind. “See you in the morning, Declan.”

He didn’t reply, so she headed toward the door. Just when she reached it, he called, “Thank you, Holly.”

Glancing over her shoulder, she smiled slightly. “You’re welcome.”

Holly returned to her room, but it was a long time before she fell asleep.
