EXCERPT
Strength wrapped around Zarya. Strong arms lifted her from the ground, the fast movement caused her head to spin, and for a moment, she thought the darkness had claimed her. But her awareness remained conscious as the person who carried her ran at a super-fast speed. At that moment, she was simply relieved her body wasn’t being pounded by magic anymore.
Zarya whimpered as the thought she had nearly been killed by those witches went through her mind. Why hadn’t she been able to defend herself? What had happened to her magic? It wasn’t a fair fight—three against one—but she’d learned more magic in the last few weeks at the Academy and had been reading a lot of books. She could’ve defended herself, but instead, her magic had seemly disappeared.
The motion slowed and changed to a lumbering movement. Her breath eased as a feeling of being safety flooded through her. At least now she wasn’t going to die. She could feel her connection to life supported in the arms of her rescuer.
Zarya didn’t dare move, wanting to keep herself enveloped in his strength, knowing that in his arms, she was protected.
He slowed further, stopping to adjust her weight.
Zarya looked up to see who it was that had saved her. “Panguar,” she whispered softly.
There was a flash of animal energy in his eyes as they flickered between forms. Her barriers were down, she was vulnerable in his arms, and she was completely taken by the animal potency that vibrated around him. She’d never seen him quite like this. He’d always appeared self-centered and not at all able to care for someone else or even do a heroic act as he’d just done for her. Her thoughts about him began to change.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice deep and thick with concern.
She nodded, not taking her eyes from his. She was now in his arms and away from the witches. Her mind fogged further the longer she gazed into his eyes. Something drew her to him, to his physical prowess, the softness in the way he held her, and the reflection of worry in his eyes.
Then, she did the only natural thing for her to do in this moment, the one thing she thought she’d never do with Pan. She reached up to him, tilting her head backward. He leaned down to her. Their lips met in a hot, soft kiss of delight. The pain in her body faded as his heat burned pleasantly on her mouth. She opened herself to him, wanting to fully taste his salty testosterone that pulsed heavily through him while in his arms.
Bang! Pop!
They broke apart in alarm, crashing back to reality.
Zarya had forgotten she was badly hurt and in Pan’s arms with the witches after her. They weren’t going to let her go that easily.
“Hang on,” growled Pan.
Pan’s muscles tensed, and he broke into a sprint. Adrenaline surged through his body once more as he fled with her in his arms.
Zarya sensed the witches coming closer, and she buried into his body, her head resting on his chest that pulsed with pure muscle. She’d never realized how fast a werewolf moved. Even when she couldn’t feel the witches’ power exploding around them, Pan didn’t slow down. As unnatural for her instincts, she willed herself to relax and found herself riding the motion of his movements instead of fighting against them.
Exhaustion began to claim her. She moaned as she struggled to keep her awareness. The last thing she wanted to happen was for her to pass out. If the witches did catch them, she wanted to try and fight back, not be unconscious on the ground. The adrenaline was wearing off, along with the buzz from the kiss, and pain was pulsing through her entire being once again.
Weak, she managed to wrap her arms around Pan and hold on tight. There was something about him she couldn’t resist. Since coming to the Lost Souls Academy, he hadn’t been the one she’d imagine kissing. He hadn’t been the one she’d been resisting. Yet, it had felt so natural, and she wanted to do it again.
Something soft brushed against her cheeks. Instead of feeling alarmed as she should have, Zarya nestled in closer, wanting to escape from the pain that had been thrown at her, to forget about the attack, think only of being in Pan’s arms, and to forget about everyone who was out to get her.
