EXCERPTS:

Day 6: Ed Loves Marnie ~ 1955

At the end of the service, they exited the church through the side doors and went to wait in the lobby for the children’s arrival from the second-floor classrooms.

“Auntie Marnie,” Grace squealed, launching herself into Marnie’s arms.

Thankfully, she caught the excited five-year-old, but stumbled back and landed in Ed’s outstretched arms.

“Gotcha,” he mumbled, his mouth hovering close to her ear. The warmth of his breath tickled the back of her neck, sending a shiver down her spine.

Marnie righted herself and pulled away. “Thank you. I would have been quite the sight landing flat on my backside in the church vestibule.”

“No problem. Always happy to help a lady in distress.”

“Hi Mr. Louder,” Grace said.

“That’s Louden,” Terri corrected, taking the rambunctious child from Marnie’s grasp.

“That’s what I said,” Grace argued. “Louder.”

Ed chuckled. “I’ve been called worse.”

Steven and Hanna appeared at their mother’s side just seconds later. “Hanna, Steven,” Marnie began, “this is Uncle Stan’s friend, Major Edward Louden.” Guiding her children forward with a gentle hand to their backs, she said, “These are my children, Hanna and Steven.”

“What kinda name is Major?” Hanna asked.

Ed hunkered down on his heels until he was eye to eye with Hanna. “You must be Steven,” he said teasingly.

Hanna rolled her eyes in disbelief. “No, I’m Hanna.” Pointing her finger at her brother, she said, “He’s Steven.”

“How silly of me,” Ed exclaimed, then added, “Major isn’t my name, it’s my rank in the Air Force.”

“Is that like a soldier?” Hanna asked.

“Yes, but with airplanes.”

“You fly planes?” Hanna’s question caught her younger brother’s attention.

“Real airplanes?” Steven asked.

“Yes, sometimes. Although not as much as I used to.”

“I wanna fly in an airplane,” Steven announced.

“Maybe someday, if your mom says okay, we can go flying,” Ed suggested.

Marnie braced herself for the inevitable.

“Mommy, did you hear that, he said he’d take me flying in a real airplane not like those pretend ones we see on television but a real one with wings and stuff. Can we go, please? Pretty please, with gumdrops on top?”

“Not today,” she told him, shooing both Steven and Hanna toward the door. Once they’d gone a few feet ahead, she turned to Ed and said, “I’d appreciate it if you didn’t mention flying to my children again. I don’t like disappointing them by having to say ‘no’.”

Ed leaned a bit closer than necessary, and whispered, “I’m sorry. I’ll remember to check all future offers with you before I make them.”

Future offers? He expected there would be other opportunities to entertain her children? Marnie needed to set Edward Louden straight. There would be no other offers.

Reviews:  Enjoyable read!  Took me a couple night to read this book as it was intriguing from the beginning to the end.  First time reading by this author but hopefully won't be the last.  This book is placed together with characters of sorts and a plot that keeps you reading.

    1. Time management. I'm fortunate that my muse won't shut up, so the stories come easy. However, it's a balancing act between writing, promotion, social media, and doing all the other smaller things like covers, editing, research.
