BLURB:
Do
you know what your problem is?
Sulphur knows hers.
This 13th-century woman has trained as a fighter all her life in hopes of
joining the army. Then, within days, both of her older sisters announce plans
and suddenly Sulphur is expected to find a man to marry instead.
Is it her good fortune
her homeland is gripped by fear of a pending invasion and the army now goes
door to door encouraging recruits? Sulphur thinks it is. But once she’s forced
to kill in a small skirmish, she’s ready to rethink her career decision. Too
bad it’s too late. The invasion is coming, and Ilari needs every good soldier
it has.
Once Sulphur learns
Ilari’s army has made the strategic decision to not defend certain parts of the
realm, including the one where her family lives, she has to re-evaluate her
loyalty. Is it with the military she’s always admired? Or is it with her
sisters, who are hatching a plan to defend their homeland with magic?
The problem with being
a woman who fights for what’s right is that now, she has to figure out what is.
(The War Stories of the
Seven Troublesome Sisters consists of seven short companion novels. Each tells
the personal story and perspective of one of seven radically different sisters
in the 1200s as they prepare for an invasion of their realm. While these
historical fantasy/alternate history books can be enjoyed as stand-alone
novels, together they tell the full story of how Ilari survived.)

EXCERPTS:
I know families who support the Svadlu. Their sons and
occasionally their daughters join and serve with distinction, and they provide
financial and emotional support by funding purses given out for specific
bravery or by lodging soldiers on their lands.
My family wasn’t like that. Our strongest ties were to the
learning community and, for reasons I didn’t understand, Ilari’s most educated
felt little affinity for those who kept our society safe. Even knowing this, I
didn’t expect the hostility I encountered from my three sisters once the four
of us settled into Ryalgar’s oversized room, each of us finding a corner to put
our bedding. They weren’t hostile to me; I think they all supported my career
and were happy I’d gotten to join. They were, however, far more distrusting of
the Svadlu’s intentions and their abilities than I expected.
I never doubted the power of our fighters or their
integrity. I’d admired them for as long as I could remember. Now, my three
sisters insisted the Svadlu were not only incapable of defending us against the
Mongols, but that they also planned to betray half the realm in an ill-fated
attempt to save the other. It was preposterous.
But they persisted. Ryalgar explained how hard it would be
to defend the exposed outer nichnas where we’d grown up. She’d spent anks
researching everything known about these invaders and felt certain the Mongols’
powers of fighting on horseback were unsurpassed. They’d overrun lands far more
prepared than ours. I had to admit, Ryalgar could research a topic like no one
I’d ever met.
And Coral appeared to have done more with Davor than make a
baby. Conversations were had, and the plan to offer up the eastern half of the
realm if the battle went poorly had been in the offing since before her
pregnancy. Coral wasn’t one to lie, or even to misunderstand the intentions of
another. She read people prucking well.
My sisters’ solution? They wanted to train the farmers and
herders and even the women of the forest to fight. It was the most ridiculous
idea I’d ever heard.
