EXCERPT

“You like not answering my questions, don’t you?”
I laugh. “You want me to tell you that I find you attractive?”
“No. I want you to tell me something true.”
I hold his stare, even though I want to shrink into the floor. The intimidation I feel when he’s around isn’t out of fear—I like the way it feels. It’s becoming something I crave from him.
“Yes, I’m attracted to you.” He steps even closer, invading my personal space with his overwhelming presence. But I keep going. “It’s not the only criteria I have for choosing a boyfriend, though.”
Ryan nods. “So, you don’t like me as a person. Cool.”
He starts to turn away from me, but I reach out and grab his shirt. He looks down at my hand and back at me.
“I didn’t say that either,” I whisper.
I don’t let go of him and my knuckles brush along the hard muscles of his stomach. They tense under my touch.
I pull my hand away and his tongue darts out to wet his lips, and he steps even closer. “Let me get this straight. You find me attractive and you like me as a person, but you don’t want to date me?”
“I don’t even know you.”
“Is that something you want? To know me?”
The way he fires questions back gives me little time to think. This is happening too fast. I didn’t come here to get involved with someone new, and I sure as hell didn’t plan on falling for a guy who I can’t figure out. He’s like a puzzle I can’t solve and a part of me thinks it’s because he’s missing an important piece.
Even so, I do want to know him.
“We can be friends,” I say, finding my voice.
He chuckles under his breath, the darkness in his eyes turning them almost black. “Friends. Is that what you think we’ll be?”
