Synopsis
Isaiah
I had my chance at a family and it was stolen from me.
I was told I was a joke, so that’s just what I’ll be.
But then she gives me news that turns my whole life upside down. Nina Williams is my second chance at a family and she might just be the missing key to my heart. I just need to prove to her I’m not the joke I pretend to be.
Nina
After the loss of my parents, I’m all my brother and sister have. I’m trying to piece my family back together.
I wasn’t ready to start a family of my own.
One night with Isaiah Cole changed all my plans. He’s nothing like I thought he was and I feel happy in his arms.
But happiness isn’t built to last.
When Isaiah has a chance to complete the family he always dreamed of, will the family I never knew I wanted be left behind?

We pull up to the house and Logan picks Jada up with ease. He offers to get her ready for bed and Nina thanks him while I silently plead for him to not leave me. He does not hear my cries.
When the door closes behind Logan, Nina whirls on me.
“What the fuck?”
“Umm...my thoughts exactly?”
“Why the hell wouldn’t you tell me that Jada has been asking you to move in with us?”
Oh. Oh! Okay, yes. I fucked up.
“I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, you are. Go on.”
Well damn. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. She just asked me a few times if I was going to move in with you guys but I knew you weren’t ready to have that conversation with me again so I didn’t want you to think I was trying to pressure you. I told Jada that you and I had a lot to figure out but we had plenty of time so not to worry about it right now. I was hoping that would get her off the scent for awhile. I was just trying to help. I’m really sorry.” Okay, that’s three I’m sorry’s so Lincoln would be happy. But Nina is not. I can practically see the steam coming out of her ears.
She turns around to make sure the kids aren’t near the door. “Listen, when it comes to those kids it is not your job to protect me. They are my kids. It’s my job to protect them and I can’t do that when secrets are being kept from me.”
She’s absolutely right. I can’t say that it doesn’t hurt but she’s right. She’s their guardian, not me. As much as I care about them and consider them my family too, they aren’t my responsibility.
But damn, I want Nina and I to be a unit on all things. And it pisses me off that she doesn’t see that.
“I’m trying to undo years of damage my parents did to them. I love my parents but they were assholes and Logan and Jada got the worst of it. I’m fighting an uphill battle here and what I don’t need is you not telling me when Jada is coming to you saying she thinks I’m only happy when you’re around. That’s bullshit.”
And another slice to my heart.
“I don’t mean to say I’m not happy when you’re around because I am. But they need to be my number one. Them and this baby. They’ve never been anyone’s number one before and I’ll be damned if they think they aren’t important to me.”
“I understand that. I do. I wasn’t trying to step on your toes. I was just trying to help.”
She sighs. “I know, I know. This is hard. We’re both on unmarked territory here and we’re trying to figure out which way is up.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Yeah.”
“Will you go on a date with me?”
Her eyes widen and her mouth falls slightly open. Damn, she’s cute. I’m still absolutely terrified that she’s going to knee me in the balls but she’s so fucking cute.
“What?”
“Can I take you on a date? A real date.”
“How is this at all relevant to what we’re talking about?”
“You said we’re in unmarked territory and we’re trying to figure out which way is up. I think part of the reason we’re so stuck is because we haven’t established what kind of partnership you and I have. During the day we’re either with the kids playing mom and dad or at the doctor’s talking about LB and at night we’re in each other’s bed. I haven’t done my job of making it clear to you that I don’t want our relationship to be kept strictly to the bedroom. I don’t want a friends with benefits situation. I want to be yours, one hundred percent. Mind, body, and soul. And make no mistake, I know that you and the kids are a package deal. I want it all. I want you to trust me to help with them too, not just LB. But I need to earn that. So I need to show you how much I want that. And that involves dates. Not play dates and not Friday night dinners at home. Real dates. Will you please do me the honor of letting me take you out?”
She blinks several times and points her finger in my face. “You think you’re so slick right now. Don’t think that you can just spew some romantic shit and I’m just going to fall on my knees and suck your dick.”
“Jesus.” And now my dick is confused as to whether it should stand at attention or cower in fear. Who am I kidding? I’m definitely at half-mast right now.
“The kids and I are ready for bed so you can go home.”
Sigh. I wasn’t planning on needing to call an Uber this early but I know I fucked up.
“Tell the kids I said good night. Good night, Nina.”
“Good night. And Isaiah?”
“Yeah?”
“Tomorrow night I’ll be dressed for a quote unquote date which may or may not include heels, depending on how I feel about you at the time. So it better be good.”
I can’t hold back the smile that splits my entire face. “It’ll be more than good.”
