“How’s he doing?” she asked neutrally. She didn’t want to put her bias or hurt feelings on Bill, but God, she resented the new guy. He was in her job. Going to her meetings. With her customers. It had been months, and she still hadn’t gotten used to it.
“New Cam is an idiot.”
“Seriously?” She didn’t want to admit it to herself, but that did make her a little happy. For the first time that day, it felt like someone was on her side. Even if it was petty.
“Well, he doesn’t have much of a sense of humor. He doesn’t like it when we call him New Cam to his face, and he has no idea what he’s doing. But what do I care? As long as he stays away from my territory, it doesn’t bother me. Enough of this, what the hell happened to you today?”
She blew out a long breath and laid it out for him.
“To summarize,” he said after she’d finished. “You blundered into some sort of criminal activity that you then actively participated in and told Will to suck it when he asked you for help because you got your feelings hurt. How do you get yourself into these things? It’s like being friends with Scooby freakin’ Doo.”
“Ruh Ro.”
“Not funny.”
“I know. But just to clarify, I extricated myself from the situation when I noticed it was shady. I then called the cops instead of trying to investigate on my own, and then I declined to get involved with the police in another caper. Regardless of how I got there, I think that’s growth.”
