by Dr. Philip Earle

GENRE: Memoir, Non-fiction

BLURB:

"Guy's life was a living adventure: he was a mariner and navigator of the first order, a character with the bravery of a Viking and the kindness of Robin Hood. Generous to a fault, he could never turn his back on someone in need, and would risk his life in a flash to save the life of another. He was like a godfather to the coastal people.

– Philip Earle

"Guy Earle commanded ships when he was a boy. He had the qualities admired by Newfoundlanders, and created maximum employment in the family business wherever he could. He was truly a Newfoundland hero."

– Geoff Stirling, (1921–2013), founder, CJON-TV (NTV)

"Guy had a mind of his own. He was a terrific leader and he played hard to win at anything he did. He was quick to size up a situation and quick to take action. He never, ever accepted the word 'can't'; if it was possible, it had to be done."

– Fred Earle (1924–1999), Guy's brother and partner in business

"Skipper Guy could take charge on anything. He had no fear and believed in himself. He could make friends with the Queen, as they say, if he wanted, and get anything he wanted."

– Fred Rossiter, (1905–1985), shipmate and friend of Guy.

"It must be a beautiful thing to know you saved someone's life. Guy Earle saved me. I've had a long life, a successful business, and raised a family because of him. He was a great man."

– Ed Wahlen, businessman and friend of Guy

"Guy Earle was the exemplification of courage in everything he did. His trade was with people and his warmth spread as widely as his countless business negotiations. He gave his life to his vision of the fishery; it was his gift to his homeland, a gift few men can claim to better."

– Maurice Quinlan (1910–1983), co-founder, Quinlan Brothers Ltd

"Guy Earle was sent here by God to give to people."

– Pasteur Harold Slade

"Captain Guy was a daring seafarer whose legendary adventures rivalled those of the heroes in such Hollywood films as Captain Blood, Down to The Sea in Ships, and Captains Courageous."

– Gordon Lore, author

"There will never be another Guy Earle; there couldn't be."

EXCERPTS:

Meanwhile, about two minutes after the cry of “man overboard” had been heard, up on Water Street adjacent to Udell’s wharf, Skipper Guy came rushing into Udell’s clothing shop soaking wet from top to bottom. He cried out, “Quick, quick! Uncle John give me a new change of clothes—I’m soaked!”

Uncle John took new pants and a shirt from a rack while Guy was taking off his wet clothes. As Uncle John passed him the new clothes he asked, “Wass’ wrong, Guy? Wha’ happened?”

Guy was out of breath and couldn’t answer. When he finished putting on the dry clothes, he ran for the door as Uncle John asked, “Where are you going, Guy?”

Guy shouted back, “I gotta go down on the wharf and save meself!”

With that, he was gone around the building and ran down the hill; no one in the shop knew what had happened.

The skipper walked out on the wharf and saw the men looking over the rail of the schooner. He went aboard and asked what was going on, and the men told him someone had fallen overboard and they weren’t able to find him! Guy rushed to the rail of the boat and peered into the water, looking very concerned. He went forward, aft, and between the wharf and the side of the boat but saw nothing in the water. The men continued to mill around on deck and became worried that the person had drowned. Guy looked worried too.

Then one of the men noticed a price tag hanging off the back of Guy’s pants. When the man looked closer, he noticed also that the pants were brand new and had a crease in them! The men started to gather around the skipper, sizing up his new clothes. Guy tried his best to pass it off as new clothes he put on that day, but the one thing the skipper wasn’t good at was faking a lie. The men closed in on him as he made a run for it. They grabbed him and headed for the rail as he shouted, half laughing and half protesting, "No, no boys, ye got it wrong! I didn’t do it!” But it was too late—they knew the prankster had fooled them again—he had that funny grin on his face.

Just as Guy was going over the rail, he held on to two of the men and took them overboard with him into the harbour. When he surfaced, he was laughing to kill himself as the men called him everything they could think of. They were totally dismayed at having been completely fooled once more by the mischievous Captain Guy.
