EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT
About a year after my encounter with Jesus, I migrated to Canada. Several days after my arrival, I began feeling that something was missing from my life. After a while, it dawned on me that The Man and the burnings were what was missing. I started laughing. Yes, I was finally free of The Man. He was left in Jamaica. I imagined Him showing up the day I left and the day after, looking for me. I laughed even more as I tried to picture the look on His face when he failed to find me at my home or the places where I stayed in Jamaica. I went to bed happy that night, feeling good and free to be a normal human being again.
I laughed too soon. I woke up in the morning with a sad, dreadful feeling. Oh, no, The Man was back! He had found me. He hadn’t really lost track of me. He was simply giving me time to become acquainted with my new environment, or even to miss Him. My life in Canada, where I thought I’d escaped The Man, resumed with the usual dose of burnings, prayers to God to be rid of The Man, Bible reading, and partying.
Then, in the second year of my new life in Canada, what I feared the most happened. It was a bright, cold spring day in 1979. It was around nine or ten o’clock in the morning. I was home alone, in a new house, miles from where I used to live. Feeling sleepy, I decided to lie down in the living room, where the sun shone brightly through the windows, to get some rest before cleaning the house. I pulled the curtains back to allow the sunshine in to brighten the room and make it less scary to be alone. I laid on the carpet in front of the television, intending to relax or sleep for a while before doing some work around the house. It wasn’t long before I began to feel the familiar sense of paralysis take control of my limbs. I put up the usual fight and prayer, fighting with all my might. I fought so hard that I won. I got up and made a run for the door. I reached the door then stopped suddenly in my tracks. “What the heck’s going on here?” I asked myself out loud. “Whose body did I just jump over?”
