Isabelle
The fact he invited himself to lounge on my bed is annoying. I mean, who does that? We’re strangers, but okay. Then to watch me pack with that intense, probing gaze, like he’s trying to figure me out, is also irksome. A lot of effort was spent in pretending to ignore him.
I get the sense that Rafael Corsetti is not a man easily ignored.
For one, inquiring about my books and my Kindle shows some level of curiosity. If he wasn’t interested, he wouldn’t care about the answer, which is more than I can say for others in my life, like Gage.
Once I’m done packing, I’m sure he’ll expect me to blindly follow along. I might have been raised as a recluse, without the influences of society, but Dad always taught me to protect myself—physically and emotionally.
My throat feels thicker just imagining the number of times Dad instilled random lessons in me. Stuff I barely understood the meaning of at the time, and maybe still don’t.
Don’t let people close to you. It only hurts more.
Don’t talk to strangers and if anyone inquiries about your childhood, run away.
Don’t trust anyone besides me. I’m the only one who has your best interests at heart.
And here I am, somehow finding myself having to trust a stranger. Worse—a stranger who’s a part of the life my father hid from me. Not sure if that says something bad about me or him.
