Hustle
he’s a street hustler,
a small-time operator
who talks big in his cups
and even bigger when
the drink wears off
and it’s time to go to work,
fleecing the tourists and the old
with smiles and hugs
and promises too good
to ever be the truth
he lies for his living
and takes whatever
he can pry out of strangers,
not caring a damn
if his fraud leaves them poor—
he’s hustling for his life
and poverty has made him
impervious to empathy
all he knows is
there are those who have
whom he can easily swindle
and when he does,
he’ll cease to be
one of the have-nots,
even if it’s only for this evening
impervious to empathy

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Peter Hynes is a Canadian. He began writing poetry many years ago, in high school. His poetry has been published in various anthologies and elsewhere since. This is his first book of poems. He was born in southwestern Ontario. He still lives in the province with his wife and their small menagerie.
